We bought this stone as a 3.5 ct piece of rough in Sri Lanka, and it was never going to give up much weight. The first job at our own bench was preforming, taking the rough down to a shape worth cutting. It went from 3.5 ct to 1.42 ct, so well over half the weight was gone before the stone had a single facet. We would rather lose weight there than cut something we were not sure of. The preform then went out for heating, with no change in weight, and it came back royal blue. That is the colour you see now: a deep, saturated blue that leans neither towards ink nor towards the paler, sky-like end of the range.
What we like about it is how settled the colour is. Royal blue can be loud in a bigger stone. At 0.62 ct and 5.34 x 3.66 mm, this one is quieter. The emerald cut, graded Very Good, lays the colour out in long, flat planes instead of breaking it into sparkle, so you read the blue as a single, even body. The inclusions are slight, and in a step cut like this they are part of how the stone looks up close. We would rather say so plainly than have you discover it under a loupe.
The 0.62 ct emerald royal blue blue sapphire
It is heated, which is the ordinary, accepted route for sapphire of this colour, and it is certified by TGL, so the treatment is on the record alongside the rest of its details.
As for who it suits, we see it in a ring first. The narrow, elongated outline sits well along the finger, in a simple bezel or a pared-back claw setting with nothing competing for attention. It would work equally well as a small pendant, worn close to the collarbone where the colour can be seen against skin. And for a collector of Ceylon sapphire, it is a tidy, well-proportioned example of a royal blue, cut with its depth of 3.26 mm kept in check so it sits cleanly in a setting.
How much of the original rough is left in this 0.62ct sapphire?
We bought this stone as a 3.5 ct piece of rough. It was preformed at our own bench to 1.42 ct, and the weight did not change through heating. Cutting and polishing then brought it to the finished 0.62 ct. That is a lot of material to give up, and it is why a well-coloured finished stone of this size is never a small decision.
Was the royal blue colour already in the rough, or did it come from heating?
We can't tell you what the colour was in the rough, and we won't guess. What our bench record shows is that the stone came back from heat treatment as royal blue, and it is sold as a heated sapphire. Heating is the accepted norm for Ceylon sapphires, and we state it plainly so you know exactly what you are buying.
What does 'slight inclusions' tell me about this stone?
It means we are not calling this sapphire clean. There are small natural features inside it, and you will find them if you look closely. Inclusions are part of what marks a stone as natural, and in an emerald cut the open facets show the interior more than a brilliant cut would. If you want to judge for yourself, ask us and we will talk you through how it looks.
How does a 5.34 x 3.66 mm emerald cut look face up, and what does it suit?
Face up the stone measures 5.34 by 3.66 mm, a long and slim rectangle with the clean lines of a step cut. Its depth is 3.26 mm, so a good part of the 0.62 ct sits below the surface rather than spreading across the top. That shape suits a ring in a simple east-west or north-south setting, and it works equally well as a pendant.
What does the TGL certificate cover, and what does 'Very Good' cut grade mean here?
This stone comes with a TGL report, number TGLR-091426001-9507-9-ARN, which you can quote when you ask us about it. Our description of it as a natural, heated blue sapphire from Sri Lanka follows the specifications for this stone. The Very Good cut grade is our rating of how well the emerald cut is proportioned and finished, and it is a step below the top grade rather than a flaw.
