This spinel came to us as rough, bought by our founder at a private market in Sri Lanka. It weighed 3.515 ct before any cutting. The finished stone is 1.24 ct, a little over a third of that, which is the usual price of chasing a clean, well-proportioned emerald cut out of a rough crystal. It is natural Ceylon spinel, unheated, and the colour is the one it grew with: a greyish blue, quiet and cool rather than electric.
The stone measures 7.08 x 4.98 x 3.81 mm, long and fairly slim, with the step facets of the emerald cut running the length of it. The cut grade is Very Good. Clarity is slight inclusions, which is honest for an unheated stone and part of its natural character. A lab certificate accompanies it, and the certificate section on this page has the full details.
The greyish blue blue spinel after cutting and polishing
Who is it for? The proportions make it a natural ring stone, particularly in a bezel or a low east-west setting where the length shows. It would also sit well as a pendant, hanging vertically. But we think it suits a collector best: someone who prefers muted, steely blues to saturated ones, and who values an unheated spinel with its Sri Lankan origin documented.
The report says unheated. What does that tell me about the colour I am seeing?
It means the greyish blue on your screen is the colour the stone had when it came out of the ground, with no heat applied to change it. We list the treatment as unheated and the certificate reference on this page lets you check that against the report. Heated spinel is a normal part of the trade, but an unheated stone gives you a colour nobody has altered.
Is greyish blue a grade, or just a description?
It is a description. It tells you the blue carries a soft grey component, so the stone reads subdued and steely rather than bright or electric. There is no grading scale behind the name, so we recommend judging the colour from the photographs and the stone's character rather than from the label.
How does 7.08 x 4.98 x 3.81 mm look on the finger or on a chain?
Face up it is a slim rectangle, about 7 mm long and 5 mm wide, so the length is roughly one and a half times the width. The 3.81 mm depth gives it enough body for its 1.24 carats without making it sit tall. It will read as long and clean-lined rather than broad.
What does a Very Good cut grade mean for this emerald cut?
Very Good is the cut grade recorded in the specifications for this stone. In an emerald cut, the long step facets act like windows, so they show the stone's colour and the slight inclusions plainly rather than hiding them behind sparkle. We see that as part of the appeal of a step cut on a natural, unheated spinel.
Do you know what this stone looked like before it was cut?
Yes. We bought it as rough weighing 3.515 ct, and our founder photographed the work along the way, six photographs in all, including one of the rough. The finished weight is 1.24 ct, so the stone you see is the result of cutting that rough down into a finished emerald cut.
