Colourless is the whole point of this stone. There is no blue in it, just clear, bright sapphire from Sri Lanka that has never been heated. Look closely, though, and you will find a slight yellowish pink tint, a faint warmth that gives it a gorgeous, soft character a flat white stone lacks. Heat treatment is the normal, honest practice for white sapphire, and we buy and sell heated stones without apology. But an unheated one is the premium tier, and when we saw this one in the rough, that was what made us stop.
The rough weighed 1.6 ct. By the time the cushion was finished, 0.74 ct remained, so more than half the weight went onto the wheel. What is left is eye clean and measures 5.87 x 4.33 x 3.08 mm, a gently elongated cushion with softened corners. We graded the cut Very Good, and it shows in how evenly the stone carries light across the table.

Because its body colour is so light, it takes on whatever sits around it. In yellow gold that hint of warmth deepens slightly, and in white metal it goes cool and icy. That makes it a natural choice for a ring, where the elongated shape sits comfortably along a finger and the stone can be the quiet centre of a simple setting. It also works as a pendant, where the clear stone catches the light from every angle as it moves.
It will suit someone who wants a natural, untreated stone without the weight of a large one. Collectors who like to own the unheated version of a familiar stone will understand it at once. The TGL report confirms the treatment status and origin, and you will find it in the certificate section of this page.
What is special about the colour of this white sapphire?
It is colourless and unheated, so what you see is the stone as it came out of the ground, with nothing done to change its colour. It is also eye clean, which lets the stone look clear and bright. A white sapphire gives a soft, silvery brightness rather than the sharp sparkle of a diamond, and that quieter character is why many people choose it.
Does the cut suit a ring set with a diamond alternative in mind?
Yes, the soft corners of a cushion sit well in a solitaire or a simple east-west style setting, and the elongated outline stays slim on the finger. Sapphire is a hard, durable stone, and a depth of 3.08 mm gives it a reasonable profile for a ring. It would work just as well as a pendant if you would rather wear it close and out of harm's way.
Is a natural, unheated white sapphire a fair stand-in for a diamond when it comes to rarity?
It is a different kind of rarity. A diamond is chosen for its fire, while a stone like this is chosen because it is natural, untreated and from Sri Lanka, and only a limited amount of rough yields a clean colourless sapphire. This one is a single stone with its own proportions, not one of a matched run.
Is this stone more for wearing or for keeping?
We think of it mainly as a stone to wear, because the cut and the eye-clean clarity are made for a ring or pendant that gets seen. That said, a natural, unheated Ceylon sapphire of this size is a good addition to a collection, and one that suits someone who prefers a diamond alternative with a story behind it.
